The organization of the olive-growing sector began in 2009 on the occasion of the first OLEOMED conference and the establishment of the Olive-Growing Interprofessional Organization, as shown in issue No. 4 of the Filaha Innov journal.
Projections for olive oil production in Algeria by 2014 are based on the impact of new plantations entering production and on the modernization of the processing sector.
The Agricultural Economy Renewal Plan focuses on this industry and aims to increase productivity and the quality of olive oil, promote technology, implement modern methods for establishing and managing olive groves, and set up modern olive oil extraction units.
On the international level, the olive sector is attracting growing interest due to the expansion of the global trade in “Green Gold,” which appeals to nutritionists and dietitians seeking a healthier diet.
Algeria is aware that olive cultivation can be developed and can become a major asset if expanded to match the nation’s full potential. Algerian olive growers aim to extend the olive-growing area to 500,000 hectares per year.
The Agricultural and Rural Economy Renewal Plan is capable of meeting the challenge of developing this sector.
In this regard, the FILΑHA INNOVE Think Tank (GRFI) plans to establish productive partnerships and strengthen the role of olive growing by organizing the 1st Mediterranean Olive-Growing Forum, “OLEOMED,” to be held on March 29–30 in Algiers (Algeria), at the El Aurassi Hotel.
Experts from both Mediterranean shores and from Algeria will be invited to share their experiences and expertise.
This initiative aims to create a platform for reflection and consultation on ways to improve production conditions, certification, storage, quality control, processing, marketing, and exportation — a comprehensive effort to revitalize the olive sector in Algeria.
